Monkeyland

The world’s first free-roaming, multi-species Primate Sanctuary, where if you are lucky, you will hear the Howlers do their daily call or the Gibbons serenade nature or maybe even the Black and White Ruffed lemurs doing a location call through the sanctuary.

Monkeyland is a forever home to ex-captive primates from closed down zoo’s, parks, or even ex-pets. Over 550 apes, monkeys and lemurs live at Monkeyland. On a visit to Monkeyland one of the most experienced primate guides in South Africa will take you on a 1 hour guided tour through the forest.

During the tour the guides will point out the array of primates living out their natural lives in the 12-ha indigenous forest and regal you with stories about them as well as some fun facts.

You will be given ample time to take photos and ask question. A little known fact is that the ticket is a day ticket and you can do as many tours during the day as you like and time allows.

If you require your guided tour not to be in English but in Afrikaans or French then please book this at least 48 hours in advance to ensure availability. This sanctuary is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Wheelchair accessible. All Weather facility – during rain you will get wet.

A true primate sanctuary
Monkeyland is the worlds first free roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary. It’s mission is to educate and foster greater understanding of our primate cousins and the threats and challenges they are facing.

Free roaming primates
The majority of primates living in the wild do so in large family groups. We care for rescued primates and do all we can to give them as natural a life as possible in the habitat we have access to.

Support Monkeyland
At present, Monkeyland cares for over 550 primates which are spread across 9 species. You can support our cause by visiting the sanctuary, visiting our shop, volunteering, or buying a square meter (or more) of forest for the animals to help preserve our sanctuary!
